Temple Baptist Church and Temple Christian School
Temple Baptist Church was incorporated on October 6, 1964 by Pastor Joe Pelfrey, Charles Erickson and Karl Kramer. The church itself began by meeting in the Lion’s Club of Fort Myers. Later, the church rented a building on McGregor Boulevard for a short time, and then met in a storefront on McGregor Boulevard for a few months until the church constructed its first building circa 1968 on Ballard Road in Fort Myers, Florida.
Pastor Dannie Webster who became the pastor in 1973 was led to begin a place for students to learn in a Christian school. Construction for the present building began in 1974 on Highway 31, in North Fort Myers, Florida. Temple Christian School was founded as an outreach ministry of of the church in 1975 with thirteen students in primary grades and four staff members. It quickly grew and additional grades and faculty were added each year. In 1976-77, a new auditorium and additional school rooms were added. Temple Baptist School’s first graduating class was in 1980.
In 1984, Pastor Ken Griffith came on board. In 2006-07 a $40,000 playground was constructed for the use of the school. 2015 brought Pastor Nathan Thomas as the senior pastor until September of 2017. Then Hurricane Irma took a toll on the facilities of Temple Baptist Church and Temple Christian School and did well over a quarter of a million dollars of damage.
Pastor John Edwards arrived in December of 2017 as our current Senior Pastor and the Administrative Director of Temple Christian School. Extensive repairs got underway upon his arrival and by April 2018 the students were able to move back into their classrooms. Needless to say, the 2017-18 school year was tumultuous. As soon as things got back to normal for our 2018-19 school year, another tragedy struck Temple Christian School. In October 2018, a horrible car accident claimed the lives of the school’s principal, Mrs. Dawn Baker, her husband and teacher Mr. Chet Baker as well as their 4 year-old son Jamison. Those people were not replaceable, but the positions were, and Temple Christian School is fully staffed. The school provides top notch education using Abeka Curriculum for grades K-4 (VPK) through the 5th grade. There is a longstanding reputation for excellence in the community and new school families enroll each year based on the recommendation of satisfied parents. We are excited about our future here at Temple Baptist Church and we are headed in a healthy direction for the Lord. The property is debt free and is poised for growth as the ministries reach into the community and the newly developed Babcock Ranch neighborhood.
